What a dope edit!

People try to compare then to the Jacksons, but if you look, they were aiming in two different directions. The J5 were following after the groups of the 1960s, refining the moves and applying the musical style of 1970. The Sylvers were something different. They weren't trying to do 1960s moves, they were refining the disco, line-dance trend, because choreography for 4 or 5 (the groups of the '60s) just doesn't work for 6 to 9. This is so difficult that there wasn't another group to make 9 performers work until Girls' Generation came along, 30 years later Their sound also stands on its own (though others attempted to duplicate it), again because of the sheer "throw weight" of all of those individual voices working at the same time. They also had an advantage over those trying to copy them, in that they all had grown up speaking together, with the same vocal patterns. The Jacksons were a black group, Motown breaking out of the mold to appeal to mainstream listeners Listening to them, they SOUNDED black. That was their whole rice bowl, bridging the gap between black music and the rest of the world. They were the right tool for the job. OTOH, the Sylvers were a CALIFORNIA group, who happened to be black, but pretty much just sounded West Coast. They didn't need to break out, they just needed to grow from the "Little Angels" -- the group's "starter kit" -- and as they did, they were perfectly placed to fit right in with disco. Even people who didn't like disco (such as myself) bought Sylvers records, because they were making music worth listening to, not just dancing to.

Another underrated group that got swept into the mix of many other great musicians from that time period just supremely talented family
